Youngblood, 9 years ago Hello, I have a National Cash register exactly like yours. If you reach inside the drawer i believe next to the back on the right hand side push the pin up so you can remove it, and look on the bottom of the drawer, mine has a dated sticker Jan. 11th 1946 'in service date' at I.H. Store in Winston Salem NC. Close by should be the serial number; it is a five or more digit number generally in the 100,000s or millions. If the serial number begins with an S, the machine was reworked and resold by NCR. Check the front of the cash drawer. Many National cash registers have the name 'National' across the front.

About this object

This ornate brass cash register made by the National Cash Register Company in Ohio, USA was used by William Anderson [1874-1945], butcher at his Port Macquarie shop to record sales and receipts in Australian imperial currency.
Manufactured before 1900, the cash register was rebuilt in 1905, possibly to make it suitable for use with Australian imperial currency, refitted with a new serial number and sold as new. This was common practice with business machines sold by the National Cash Register Company. It is believed the cash register was in continuous used by the Anderson family until Australia introduced decimal currency in 1966.
This cash register was designed for aesthetics and functionality during the ‘brass era’ when business machines were designed to look beautiful as well as register sales. After World War I with a scarcity of resources and the desire to reduce production costs cash registers took on a more functional appearance.
William Anderson [1874-1945] was born at Port Macquarie and after completing his education learnt butchering whilst working for Messrs McInherney Bros. In 1906 Anderson purchased Lockton’s butchering business and later went into partnership with W Ross. By 1917, Anderson and Ross were the only commercial butchers in Port Macquarie.
William Anderson established Anderson and Sons in 1926 with his sons Neville, Vernon, Ian and Lance, who all worked in the business at one time or another. In 1927, they built a new butcher’s shop in the centre of Port Macquarie’s CBD on the corner of Horton and William Streets. The company ceased trading in 1955 when they sold their then three shops to Midco (the Mid Coast Co-operative Meat Society Ltd), however the Anderson’s continued to operate a number of butcher’s stores in Port Macquarie, and later purchased back the Midco stores.
When William Anderson opened his first butcher’s store he installed a Dayton Computing Scale. The scale was reported to have 2 faces one indicating the weight by an index finger and the other the cost of the weight. It was believed to be the only computing scale of its type in the district and enabled Anderson to watch the weights and measures and his customers the pounds, shillings and pence they were spending. It is highly likely that this cash register was installed at the same time.
A cash register of this type and size suggests that William Anderson established sophisticated and progressive business practices when he opened his first butcher shop. It appears that he was interested in watching his pennies and not just his weights, no doubt contributing to what became a long and successful family business.
